The middle class families were big into their conservative family values of the previous generations. However, the new generation of that time was progressive and full of energy. Throwing simple families to the wind, both men and women did all sorts of things. Slang and cars were both big in the 1960s, so it makes sense that car-slang would pop up all over the place. Phrases like calling shotgun or slapping slug bugs were invented in this time. The Civil Rights Movement is another big stride of this time.
